Handfasting is an ancient marriage ritual that is becoming increasing popular with modern couples. It is said that it is where the term ‘tying the knot’ originates from.
It involves the loose tying together of a couple’s wrists at their pulse points with ribbon or cord of their choice to signify their union together in marriage. The ritual is highly symbolic and spiritual and will often take place outdoors and have connections to nature.
You can choose whatever colour ribbons you want, normally two different colours for each individual. Other family members can also be involved to acknowledge your children or the blending of two families.
Once wrapped around the couple’s wrists the ribbons or cords are then pulled to form an Infinity knot or Celtic knot, whichever knot you prefer. Again, this is a great visual symbolisation to add to your ceremony and a fantastic keepsake too.
